Hello I am not sure about the "diagnostics" but I do know that the National Survey on the Mental Health of Australian Adults did include substance use (as addiction) in the survey. Associated disability in regard to mental health status was then determined by a mini survey which looked at days out of usual roles, that is, the inability to perform the usual roles for instance, days in which they couldn't work. Only some people with any of the mental health conditions experienced any significant "days out of role" and thus were not defined as having an associated disability. **PLEASE NOTE NEW EMAIL ADDRESS** Best regards Laurence Bathurst School of Occupation and Leisure Sciences Faculty of Health Sciences University of Sydney PO Box 170 Lidcombe NSW 1825 Australia Ph: 61 2 9351 9509 Fax: 61 2 9351 9509 Email: [log in to unmask] See School Website www.ot.cchs.usyd.edu.au Home Ph: 61 2 9818 2050 Mobile Ph: 0407 069 441 ----- Original Message ----- From: "acunningham" <[log in to unmask]> To: <[log in to unmask]> Sent: Friday, March 08, 2002 5:40 AM Subject: Addiction I would appreciate any views on these questions. Do people who are addicted to drugs/alcohol have an impairment? Are people who are addicted to drugs/alcohol disabled? ________________End of message______________________ Archives and tools for the Disability-Research Discussion List are now located at: www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/disability-research.html You can JOIN or LEAVE the list from this web page. ________________End of message______________________ Archives and tools for the Disability-Research Discussion List are now located at: www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/disability-research.html You can JOIN or LEAVE the list from this web page.
