Dear All, There was some discussion of Kipling's first car in response to a query some time ago. The car was a Locomobile Steamer bought in June 1901 and it so happens that one was illustrated in the Mystery Motors item in the motoring section of yesterday's Daily Telegraph. A reader wanted a picture of the car identified (because it was used by the man who murdered his Great Aunt !!) and along with the identification the reply noted that 400 were sold in England in 1900-1901. It also mentions that it consumed so much water that the boiler had to be refilled every 20 miles. From Meryl Macdonald's account in her book The Long Trail it would appear that RK would have been glad to have gone 20 miles in one go and would have happily filled the water tank. The picture and comment can be seen at www.mysterymotors.com. It is currently some way down the list headed 'Latest IDs'. A click on the thumbnail picture will call up one of reasonable size. The car pictured has a horn instead of the bell which was apparently fitted to RK's car. Yours Sincerely, Roger Ayers Honorary Membership Secretary, The Kipling Society
