medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I too can't generalise---but on religious habits as an
indicator of corporate identity, signifying outwardly the
_cor unum et anima una_ (Acts 4:32) which the members of a
religious order should share, check out the Preface to the
Premonstratensian statutes (ed. Pl. L. Lefevre and W. M.
Grauwen, _Les statuts de Premontre au milieu du xiie
siecle), later adopted by the Dominicans; Humbert of Romans
in the mid-C13 deplored the variety of habits worn in
practice by the early Dominicans and recommended greater
uniformity (_Expositio magistri Humberti super
constitutiones Fratrum Praedicatorum_, in J. J. Berthier,
ed., _B. Humberti de Romanis Opera de Vita Regulari_).
