medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

You will probably find the introduction of Papal Ceremonial in the Twelfth
Century (Subsidia IV Henry Bradshaw Society) by Susan Twyman (published
this year by the Boydell Press) useful as a guide to sources. But I don't
think she mentions organs.

>Hello list, I am a postgraduate student in Glasgow university and I am
currently researching the ritual and liturgy in the church during the
period of the 'Byzantine captivity,’ esp. in the period of pope
Vitalian and just after. However i have two queries regarding my research
that i am hoping that list members may be able to help me with. One is the
issue of Organs being used in Rome. All the authorities I have read have
said that ecclesiastics until the 10th c did not use the organ. However
Bede mentions organs as being in Anglo Saxon England in the late 7th c. and
they are mentioned in an ecclesiastical context. If this is true, the most
likely source of the instrument would be Rome but I can find no mention of
any use of the organ in Rome. Thus I am wondering if any list member has
any other information sources of this secular instrument being in the hands
of the church before the 10th c. My other query is similar and relates to
any other source that i have m!

Bishop as it grows further away form the Byzantium and asserts its
independence. I am already using the ordo Romanus Priimus and the Liber
pontificalis amongst others and i am wondering if list members have any
suggestions for primary and secondary materials to add my list. I would
also be interested in debating and discussing any of my rather tenuous
results so far. My thanks in advance to anyone who feels they have
something to contribute and I await you replies with eager anticipation.
