NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY SINGAPORE, FACULTY APPOINTMENTS

The Humanities and Social Studies Education Academic Group (HSSE) at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University is responsible for the professional preparation of geography teachers for the school system in Singapore.  The academic rigour of the undergraduate teacher education programme, BA (Education), is maintained through specialisation in one academic subject.  Geography is one of these subjects.

The Academic Group has 2 vacancies in the following areas

(i) A social and cultural geographer with interest in population, ethnicity and gender issues.  The person will be teaching geography in undergraduate and graduate programmes at both pre-service and in-service levels as well as supervising Masters and PhD students in geography by research.

(iii)  A geography teacher educator with strong interests in educational research/action research focusing on geography curriculum issues, pedagogy, information and communication technology.  The person will be teaching in curriculum studies courses at preservice and inservice levels and Masters level.

For the positions, preference will be given to candidates who are strong in fieldwork expertise and willing to take students on field studies and fieldwork projects.

Gross annual emoluments (for 12 months) inclusive of Group Bonus (applicable to Assistant Professors & above) range for the above position is as follows:

Lecturer:S$52,450-S$74,800
Assistant Professor:S$72,100-S$123,200
Associate Professor:S$110,600-S$208,600
Professor:S$182,000-S$275,800

(US$1=S$1.82 approximately as at July 2001)

The commencing salary will depend on the candidate’s qualifications, experience and the level of appointment offered.

In addition to the above, the University may decide to pay an annual variable component/allowance under the flexi-wage system.  The total amount of such payment depends on the economic situation in Singapore.  In the past years, this has ranged from 1 month’s to 3 months’ salary.

Leave and medical benefits will be provided.  Other benefits, depending on the type of contract offered, include provident fund benefits or an end-of-contract gratuity, settling-in allowance, subsidised housing, children’s education allowance, passage assistance and baggage allowance for transportation of personal effects to Singapore.  Staff members may undertake consultation work subject to the approval of the University, and retain consultation fees up to a maximum of 60% of their gross annual emoluments in a calendar year.
