Can anyone tell me why and how vigils were
practised (or direct me to a source). I'm interested in confraternal
vigils, specifically whether they were understood as acts of collective penance,
and whether their rationale was in any way related to the failure of the
Apostles to stay awake during the night in Gethsemane.
