medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear All

Richard Copsey's comment that
>With regard to churches dedicated to Old Testament figures, none come
quickly to mind,
he is, of course, quite right to point out the paucity of such churches
in western Europe. It goes without saying that the position is different
in eastern and central Europe. See the Balkan and Russian datasets soon
to be available on the TASC website.

Best wishes

Graham

culture

With regard to churches dedicated to Old Testament figures, none come
quickly to mind. However, the medieval Carmelite Order had a special
interest in Elijah and Elisha - claiming that they were the original
founders of the hermit community on Mount Carmel - and so these two
O.T.
prophets featured prominently in the Order's calendar of saints (and
still
do). There is even an 18th cent. statue of Elijah - as founder of the
Carmelite Order - in St. Peter's, Rome.
Fifteenth century Carmelite catalogues of saints also contained other
O.T.
figures whom the Carmelites claimed to have been hermits on Mount Carmel
and
hence "members" of the Order, e.g. Jonah, son of the widow of Sarepta
whom
Elijah raised from the dead, Obadiah who sheltered some of the prophets
during the persecution of Achab, the prophet Micah, and even John the
Baptist (whose statue, clothed as a Carmelite was in the Carmelite
church,
Nottingham, in the 15th cent).
