medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (22. January) is the feast day of:

Patroclus of Troyes (d. 259) Patroclus was a prosperous Christian layman
of Troyes, who devoted much care and money to the poor. He was martyred by
beheading.

Irene of Rome (d. 288) The widow Irene appears in hagiography as the woman
who cared for St. Sebastian after he had been shot full of arrows, nursing
him back to health.

Vincent of Saragossa (d. 304 (?)) According to legend, Vincent was born in
Huesca (Spain). He became archdeacon under Bishop Valerus of Saragossa
and was banished with him to Valencia. There Vincent was martyred. A
strong cult developed at his grave in the early Middle Ages, which spread
from there to France and Germany. According to (at least German) folk
belief, the weather conditions on the feast of Vincent are supposed to
foretell those of the rest of the year.

Theodelinde (d. 627) Theodelinde, daughter of a duke of Bavaria, married
two kings of the Lombards (consecutively). She was the first Lombard queen
to profess catholic instead of Arian beliefs. Her influence is supposed to
be responsible for the acceptance of catholicism by all the Lombards in c.
600. Theodelinde was in friendly contact with Pope Gregory I, who
dedicated four books to her.

Domenico di Sora (d. 1031) Domenico was born in 951 in Umbria (Italy). He
became a Benedictine (?) monk, then a hermit. He attracted many disciples
and settled them in several monasteries in Umbria and the region of Naples,
himself leading the monastery of S. Maria di Sora.
