You should take a look at moodle (http://www.moodle.com). I briefly reviewed it on ScotFEICT (address below), and on the Moodle site itself there are plenty of links to sites that use it.

Dear all
Does anyone knows of an opensource (preferably free) software that suits the needs of an academic library that wants to set up a basic virtual learning enviroment?
If someone has a similar experience I would be very interested.
