* Apologies for cross postings * Two forthcoming one-day courses from the BUFVC ..... ======================================================== Streaming Moving Pictures and Sound using Window Media Products: 13th February 2002 Audio for the Web: 21st February 2002 ======================================================== STREAMING MOVING PICTURES & SOUND USING WINDOWS MEDIA PRODUCTS ======================================================== WEDNESDAY 13TH FEBRUARY 2002 Presenter: William Garrison (University of Portsmouth) This course is offered by the Advisory Service to give detailed guidance on streaming audio and video material using the Microsoft Windows Media Services. It will cover server design and networking issues as well as content preparation, encoding, and rights management. The session will be divided into two parts with the first focusing on technology, implementation, and overcoming barriers, both technical and political, within further and higher educational insitutions. The second part will explore content development including encoding, bandwidth, and image quality in the context of learning objectives. William Garrison is Producer at the Learning Development Centre, University of Portsmouth, and has been responsible for the development of extensive streaming media resources for thousands of simultaneous users. This includes the technical implementation for the JISC funded <Lifesign Project> which is now online with over forty video streams for the Life Sciences. Intended audience: audio visual and computer service providers, librarians, and archivists within higher and further education. ======================= AUDIO FOR THE WEB ======================= THURSDAY 21ST FEBRUARY 2002 Presented by Greg Newton-Ingham, Head of the National Advisory Service (MAAS Media Online) The use of sound can create and enhance web content. This course has been created by the BUFVC in response to the needs of the academic community. Illustrating real uses, such as libraries and archiving, lecturing and distance learning, this course will give participants the technical and practical knowledge required to handle audio material successfully. The day covers production and reuse of audio material, associated copyrights, explaining and demystifying technical terminology, and storing, compressing and delivering content. There is also time allotted for discussion and questions. Intended audience: audio visual and computer service providers, librarians, archivists. The British Universities Film & Video Council exists to promote the study and use of moving images in education and research. It runs a regular programme of one-day courses at its base in Central London.
