The movement of people off unemployment benefit/income support to invalidity benefit in this period was not confined to the North East. A member of my own family in the North West of England was 'pushed' off unemployment benefit and encouraged to consider herself as unable to work (even though she was not, at that time, very ill). It was an open secret amongst benefit claimants and their families in the area that the DHSS were doing this, and most claimants were aware that it was to 'make the figures look good' . ****************************************************** Please note that if you press the 'Reply' button your message will go only to the sender of this message.
