Whether I (we?) like it or not, part of my (our?) duties as design educator( s) include assessing student work. In the engineering design area there is an almost complete lack of published discussion regarding how one assesses student design projects. I was wondering whether anyone on the list has any good references that discuss how to assess student designs. Ideally the references would be more than "use peer review, expert review, and student reflection" and would discuss the pedagogical and philosophical rationale behind the assessment. There is a related topic of assessing "open-ended problems" in science and mathematics, but even in those areas there doesn't seem to be much discussion of the "why" of the techniques. That having been said, and good references would be appreciated. Jason Foster
