2nd international conference on research in art and design

        Research into Practice
        5 July 2002
        University of Hertfordshire

        http://www.artdes.herts.ac.uk/res2prac/

You are cordially invited to register for the international Research into
Practice conference which this year will explore the fundamental concept of
knowledge in art and design.

If research is the advancement of knowledge, and if PhDs are awarded for an
original contribution to knowledge and/or its interpretation, what do we
mean by knowledge in art and design? What characteristics must it have so
that it can make a contribution to the discipline that is accepted by
academics and practitioners? If we reject Positivist notions of objective
knowledge or tacit implications of truth, with what do we replace them?

Keynote speakers:
Prof Norma Starszakowna (The London Institute, UK)
Chair of the HEFCE Research Assessment Panel for Art and Design, and
Member of the AHRB Research Board 1998-00.
Andrew Harrison (University of Bristol, UK)
Author of "Making and Thinking, a Study of Intelligent Activities" (1978),
"Philosophy and the Visual Arts, Seeing and Abstracting" (1987) and
"Philosophy and the Arts, Seeing and Believing" (1997).

There will also be 18 selected speakers from 9 countries.

Key dates:
        registration deadline 7 June 2002
        conference 5 July 2002
