PhD STUDENTSHIP IN SCHEDULING Fuzzy Multicriteria Approaches to Scheduling and Rescheduling Problems in Uncertain Environments School of Mathematical and Information Sciences, Coventry University 1st January, 2002 – 31th December, 2005 Applications are invited for one fully funded PhD studentship, of three years' duration, to work on an EPSRC-funded joint project of Coventry University and University of Nottingham You will be based in the Control Theory and Applications Centre within the School of Mathematical and Information Sciences, Coventry University. Project Description In this research project a new methodology for developing automated production scheduling systems will be developed, which addresses two important issues: treating various types of uncertainty that exist in scheduling problems using fuzzy-logic based techniques, and considering multiple criteria which describe various performance measures of schedules. In addition, new fuzzy multicriteria rescheduling methods will be developed to be used as a response to various disruptions that can occur in a manufacturing environment. This project presents an ambitious multi-disciplinary programme of research, which will attempt to draw together the three research themes (scheduling/rescheduling, fuzzy reasoning, multicriteria decision making) with a specific aim of successfully tackling difficult, uncertain and dynamic real-world scheduling problems. It comprises both theoretical analysis and practical software implementation. The research will be carried out under the supervision of Dr Dobrila Petrovic, Professor Keith Burnham, and Professor Colin Reeves. Collaborators The research work will be carried out in collaboration with the Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning Research Group (ASAP) at the University of Nottingham, a Denby Pottery Company Limited from Denby, and a printing company Sherwood Press from Nottingham. PhD Studentship The studentship provides a living allowance at the standard EPSRC rate (£8,415 per annum) and tuition fees at the UK/EU student rate. Applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, good honours degree (or equivalent) in Operational Research, Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline. You will have a sound mathematical and computing knowledge and a willingness to work in a real industrial environment and as a part of a team. Applications Applicants should send a detailed CV together with the names and addresses of two referees who can support their application. Applications should be sent to: Miss Suky Sanghera School of Mathematical and Information Sciences, Coventry University, Priory Street Coventry CV1 5FB, UK Or please e-mail your CV to [log in to unmask] Closing date for applications is 20th September 2002. -- *********************************************** Dr Dobrila Petrovic Senior Lecturer Coventry University School of Mathematical and Information Sciences Priory Street, Coventry CV1 5FB, UK Telephone: 44 24 76888766 Fax: 44 24 76888585 E-mail: [log in to unmask]
