+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Applications to take part in the workshops: ICONIC TURN – Bildwissenschaften Munich, summer semester 2002 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Burda Akademie zum Dritten Jahrtausend and Humanwissenschaftliches Zentrum der LMU in cooperation with lothringer13, Ort für aktuelle Kunst und neue Medien Under the title "Iconic Turn – the new image of the world", in the summer semester of 2002 a new interdisciplinary series of lectures will be held at the LMU Munich, which will address the concept of the "Image" or "Picture" (“Bild”) as a central category in all natural science and cultural studies. The series will be accompanied by several one-day workshops following up the individual lectures. The concept of the "Iconic Turn" refers to the increasingly pictorial nature of social communication, in which visual media and phenomena have become the decisive element in exchange, understanding, and perception. "Turn" also refers to a change in historical studies which is directing their attention to historical objects and developments, and is bound up with widespread expectations for an interdisciplinary and cross-media opening up of cultural studies. The goal of the workshops The goal of the workshops is to investigate and to formulate the basic problems of an interdisciplinary study of images (“Bildwissenschaft”). This includes the idea of the image in its technical, iconic, and natural science aspects and the problems it poses in a multimedia and synaesthetic information society. It also involves the common prehistory of research carried out on the study of images in various cultural studies and natural science disciplines, as well as the international comparability of "Bildwissenschaft" and "Visual Culture Studies" in terms of their respective tasks and areas of enquiry. The discussion of the concept of the "Image" across disciplinary boundaries raises the question of the prospects and tasks that emerge for further scientific research and the question of what new educational formats it would make sense to derive from them. Composition of the workshops The workshops are made up of a group of about 20 participants from different disciplines, who will work together throughout the semester. They will in each case be held the day after the lecture. The speakers, Prof. Dr. Hans Belting, Prof. Dr. Horst Bredekamp, Sir Norman Foster, Prof. Dr. Peter Sloterdijk, Prof. Dr. Wolf Singer, and Susan Sontag (invited), and the moderators of the lectures will be present at the workshops. Participants should be from a variety of disciplines in the humanities and the natural sciences. Young scholars (graduates and postgraduates), who may also be proposed by the heads of their institutes or their professors, are welcome. People from business will also be brought in (approx. 3). Some 2-3 places will be occupied, on a rotating basis, by relevant specialists. The workshops will be personally certified by the Rector of the LMU. Schedule The workshops are one-day block seminars (in each case on the day following the relevant lecture): 10.00 (=10.15) to 13.00, 14.00 (=14.15) to 16.00. They will be held in the premises of the lothringer13, Ort für aktuelle Kunst und neue Medien A preparatory meeting will be held in mid-April. Precise timetables will be given on www.iconic-turn.de. Applications to participate in the workshops An important condition for participation is unfailing attendance at the lectures and workshops (including a preparatory meeting) and a readiness to be involved in the preparation (e.g., a working paper), holding, and assessment of a workshop. Anyone interested in taking part in the workshops should submit their CV, making clear the main focuses of their studies and research as well as their interests outside the university. They should also set out on an A4 page why the theme of Image Studies (Bildwissenschaften) is of interest to them and their area of research.
