Hi all,

Greetings from the Gulf of Mexico. It's been unseasonably warm the last week
but the temperatures dropped today and it looks like were in for a cruel
winter in the 70s.

In an attempt to hijack the discussion for my own personal uses I would like
to extend these roles to include what I guess you could call institutions
and the communication layers proposed by Prof. Yochai Benkler of NYU Law
School and explored in Lawrence Lessig's book "The Future of Ideas" (of
which I'll explain later on).

Along with Lessig's book I'm working with a number of sources, mainly by
Friedrich Kittler (Discourse Networks), Vilem Flusser (The Shape of Things)
and Pierre Levy (Collective Intelligence) but also a couple of shorter
pieces available online:

One Josephine posted a link to is a talk by Lane Relyea titled
"IT'S THE END OF ART CRITICISM AS WE KNOW IT (AND THE ARTWORLD FEELS FINE)
and it is particularly good for this discussion:

The other is a paper presented by artist Andrea Fraser in 1998, "Slashing
the American Canvas or... Why I Would Rather Have a Day Job", in which she
discusses trends in American cultural policy and the NEA's American Canvas
report.

In addition let me also add Pamela Jennings' "New Media Arts/New Funding
Models since she's on the list: http://digital-Bauhaus.com
