Postdoctoral position in experimental and theoretical molecular spectroscopy in the University of Helsinki, Finland One postdoctoral position funded by the European Community is available in the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry for one year starting immediately. Salary is to be negotiated. The successful candidate is expected to carry out experimental and/or theoretical research in the field of molecular spectroscopy. On the experimental side, we are particularly interested in new spectroscopic laser methods for molecular overtone state studies. Possible projects involving active laser stabilization to an external high-finesse cavity include - vibration-rotation fluorescence studies - Raman spectroscopy - cavity ring-down spectroscopy - kinetics studies The other possibility is to work in the field of theoretical and computational molecular spectroscopy, particularly developing new Hamiltonian models for highly excited vibrational states. Experience in electronic structure calculations and in computer programming is also useful. Possible projects include - large amplitude motion in overtone spectroscopy - molecular systems where chemical bonds are broken and formed - reactivity of vibrationally excited molecules on catalytic surfaces - use of geometric algebra in molecular physics For some of our publications in laser spectroscopy see particularly J. Chem. Phys. 110, 1424 (1999) and Chem. Phys. Letters 346, 373 (2001) and in theoretical spectroscopy Adv. Chem. Phys. 104, 41 (1998) and J. Chem. Phys. 116, 1825 (2002). For other publications see our web page. The positions are associated with the EC network, Sphers (Spectroscopy of highly excited rovibrational states, http://www.chem.uni-wuppertal.de/sphers/). Close collaboration is going on with several of the groups taking part in this network. The Helsinki molecular spectroscopy group has excellent experimental and computational facilities. The group consists of about 10 people. Our laboratory is located in the Chemistry Department building in the new science campus area. Helsinki being the capital offers many cultural events all year through. Finland is particularly attractive due to its wild nature, which includes tens of thousands of lakes and islands. There are excellent possibilities both for summer and winter sport activities. Under the terms of the EU programme, the young postdoctoral researchers, who are successful applicants for the supported positions, must be aged 35 years or less, and must be nationals of a Community member state or a state associated with the EC programme (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland).
