On Gold and Silver,  Robert Hunt
An account of the mines and refining methods of the 1870's written by Robert
Hunt who was keeper of Mining Records at the time and originally published
in Ure's Dictionary of Arts, Manufactures and Mines of 1878.  This is a
facsimile reprint although the text  has been enlarged by 30% for improved
clarity  (Includes 40 illustrations).  It is an account of the mining of
precious metals, describing the mining fields of the world, (including a
lengthy account of the gold mines of North Wales) and the techniques of

On Rock Drills and Hydraulic machinery for Mines,  John Darlington
Darlington designed a rock drill used at Minera lead mines and hydraulic
pressure engines for Derbyshire coal mines.  He describes the design and use
of rock drills of the 1870's for mines and the driving of railway tunnels
while the account of hydraulic machinery includes both the theory and design
of water wheels and the then-new technique of using water power to transmit
power to hydraulic engines for pumping and winding gear below ground.
