Hi list, just in passing, here are three titles of three books, (unfortunately) in German, on the legends concerning the gnomes etc in late midieval German mining history: Blechschmidt, Manfred (Ed.) Die Silberne Rose. Europaeische Bergmannssagen (European mining legends) (Rudolfstadt: Greifenverlag, 1976); Schramm, R. (Ed.) "Venetianersagen von Geheimnisvollen Schatzsuchern" (Venetian Legends about mysterious treasure seekers); Trommer, Dr. Harry "Wo das Erz in Fuelle blinkt." Bergmannssagen (Mining legends) (Leizpzig: Friedrich Hofmeister, 1956). I remember reading several others but kept referecnes to the above three as the most impressive and entertaining.
