A good book is 'A Glossary Of The Mining And Mineral Industry' by Albert
Fay, United States Department Of The Interior 1947 754 pages.
This gives the following spellings for Sagger- saggar, saggard, SEGGAR, and
sagre.
Another book is 'A Dictionary Of Mining Minerals And Related Terms' by Paul
Thrush 1968, 1269 pages. this is a much expanded and updated version of the
Fay book, and includes the previously mentioned 'Clay under coal seams', and
the 'Clay box to hold ceramics during firing', under the heading of seggar

Hope this belatedly helps, Richard Amies.
