If you are interested in finding out about the experiences of pregnant
asylum seekers and homeless women, these reports are for you. They also
come with a guide to working with community interpreters. 1. Mothers in
Exile This report, based on interviews with 33 women carried out between
March and September 2001, paints a devastating picture of the lives of
asylum seekers who are pregnant or who have had a baby in England. 2.
Lives on hold: homeless families This report details the results and
recommendations of a new project exploring the experiences and needs of
homeless women who are pregnant or have new babies. The report aims to
influence improvements in day-to-day support of these women, as well as
long-term policy change 3. As Good As Your Word: a guide to community
interpreting and translation in public services Provides everything needed
to find and work with community interpreters and translators, as well as
giving guidance on developing a policy on language and communication. It
also covers the setting up of a structured and supportive interpreting
service for a public service organisation. Maternity Action - our
quarterly magazine The Autumn issue is out shortly, and features reports
on our research into the experiences of pregnant asylum seekers, measuring
child poverty, the history of the Sure Start Maternity Grant, and a
success story about milk tokens and an HIV asylum seeker. An annual
subscription to Maternity Action costs £16. You can also receive regular
copies by joining the Maternity Alliance as a member. A single issue costs
£4. Outreach sessions in local communities Our Outreach project is a key
service set up to reach those pregnant women and new parents who are least
likely to access us. This includes families living on benefits or with low
incomes, young or single mothers and those families whose first language
isn't English. A Maternity Alliance adviser comes to you to give advice to
the women you are working with. This is a free service. If you would like
to discuss working with our Outreach Project please contact Helen Terry
(email: [log in to unmask] ) or Lisa Wesch
(email:[log in to unmask]) Maternity Alliance's Second-tier
advice line For advisers, employers and carers wanting clarification on
issues for their clients and staff. Call 0845 601 3386 for expert advice
and information. Research The Maternity Alliance does many projects and
surveys on the care given to pregnant women and new families, especially
those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This helps us to make
recommendations backed up by real evidence. We have just finished a
project on detained pregnant asylum seekers. This project was run in
conjunction with Bail for Immigration Detainees and the London Detainees
Report Group. The report highlights the main concerns of the women and
makes seven recommendations. Can you help us? 1. Teenage diet project A
project looking at the diet of pregnant teenagers, particularly on the
links between poor diet and low income. This follows up some research we
did a few years ago called 'Poor Expectations', which looked at the diet
of pregnant women on a low income. We would like to highlight examples of
good practice in this area of work. Please let us know about any projects
involving pregnant/parenting teenagers in activities around food, e.g.
cook and eat clubs or cooking sessions in antenatal classes, etc. Contact
Helen Burchett on 020 7588 8583 x132, or email

small-scale research project to gain information about the barriers and
opportunities that exist for midwives to discuss domestic violence with
pregnant women and new mothers. If you would like to be interviewed for
the project or know pregnant women who may be willing to be interviewed
please contact Alyson Turner at 0171 588 8583 x124 or email:
