Rt Hon. Lord John Habgood MA, PhD, DD, PC
Lord John Habgood did postgraduate research and teaching in physiology
in the University of Cambridge from 1948-53. He was ordained priest in
the Church of England in 1955. He was Principal of Queen¡¦s College, Birmingham
from 1967-73 and Bishop of Durham from 1973-83. He was then Archbishop
of York from 1983-95 and was created a life peer in 1995. He is currently
Chairman of the UK Xenotransplantation Interim Regulatory Authority. John
Habgood is author of eight books on science, religion, ethics and
public affairs. His most recent, Varieties of Unbelief formed the Bampton
Lectures in the University of Oxford. He is currently Gifford Lecturer
in the University of Aberdeen on ¡¥The Concept of Nature. His 1997 Riddle
Lectures in the University of Newcastle were published under the title
of Being a Person.
Dr. Peter Fenwick MB BChir (Cantab) DPM FRCPsych
Emeritus Consultant, Maudsley Hospital, Neuropsychiatry, Epilepsy Unit,
Neuropsychiatrist to Radcliffe Infirmary Oxford Epilepsy Surgery Programme,
Honorary Research Neurophysiologist to Broadmoor Hospital. Honorary
Consultant Neurophysiologist at St. Thomas¡¦s Hospital. He lectures internationally
on automatism and the law and has frequently appeared as a medical Expert
Witness at the Old Bailey and the Appeal Court. He has researched
for many years into altered states of consciousness, meditation and
transcendent experience. He is a Vice President of the Scientific
and Medical Network and President of The Horizon Foundation (formerly
IANDS UK). He is the author of over 100 scientific papers and a number
of popular books with his wife Elizabeth. These include The Truth in the
Light, The Hidden Door and Past Life Memories.
Prof. Ann Loades, CBE, BA, MA, PhD
Prof. Ann Loades has been Professor of Divinity in the University of
Durham since 1995 and has been a lecturer in the University since 1975.
She is currently panel convener for Philosophy, Religious Studies and the
Law, Arts and Humanities Research Board and a member of the AHRB Postgraduate
Committee. She has given many lectures at international conferences around
the world and teaches a module on science and religion in her undergraduate
course ¡¥God and the World¡¦. She is a Church of England Inspector of Theological
Colleges and Courses, is a member of the Church of England Doctrine Commission
and on the standing committee for the appointment of the Regius Chair of
Divinity in the University of Cambridge. She was editor of Theology from
1991-1997. Her books include: Searching for Lost Coins: Explorations in
Christianity and Feminism, Contemporary Classics in the Philosophy
of Religion, (ed, with Loyal Rue), Dorothy L. Sayers: Spiritual Writings
(editor and compiler), The Sense of the Sacramental: Movement and
Measure in Art and Music, Place and Time, (ed. With D.W. Brown), Evelyn
Underhill.
