RESEARCH ASSISTANT

A Joint Appointment

at the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL

and the Institute of Psychiatry

We are looking for a postgraduate student with a research interest in
twentieth-century European psychiatric and/or medical history to conduct
editorial work on a report written by the Maudsley psychiatrist Sir Aubrey
Lewis in 1937. In that year, Lewis visited psychiatric institutions
throughout Europe with the exception of Germany. The three-month
appointment, beginning in June 2002, will involve archival research in the
UK and on the Continent. The successful candidate will be required to check
original manuscripts, investigate individual pre-Second World War
psychiatrists and institutions and examine a variety of psychiatric
concepts. A knowledge of European languages would be helpful.

Salary will be offered in the range £23,637 to £25,507 per annum, pro rata
(inclusive of London weighting allowance), dependent on skills and
experience.
