As a reminder, here is the latest short notice concerning the Mainz
Symposium in September:-

HISTORY OF PRINTING AND PUBLISHING IN THE LANGUAGES AND COUNTRIES OF THE
                MIDDLE EAST

SYMPOSIUM: 9-12 September 2002

EXHIBITION: September-October 2002

GUTENBERG MUSEUM, MAINZ, Germany

The Symposium forms part of the First World Congress of Middle Eastern
Studies (WoCMES): details of registration and other Congress particulars
can be found on the website at http://www.wocmes.de ; alternatively they
may be requested from the Secretariat at [log in to unmask]
The deadline for the submission of abstracts of papers has now been
extended to 15 February 2002, and further submissions will be very welcome.

So far some 36 papers have been proposed and accepted, on subjects
ranging from mediaeval Arabic block-prints to the development of digital
type-styles in the 21st century. Printing in Arabic, Armenian, Greek,
Hebrew, Kurdish, Persian, Syriac, Tatar and Turkish will feature, and
locations include Britain, Egypt, France, Germany, Iraq, Italy,
Kurdistan, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tatarstan,
Turkey, Turkistan, USA and Zanzibar.

Our earlier announcement listed, among others, the following two topics
for the Symposium:-

# The early development of libraries of printed books in the Middle East

# The problems and challenges of descriptive and analytical bibliography of
early and rare Middle Eastern printed materials

We were hoping that colleagues in Middle East librarians' circles (MELCOM,
MELA, etc.) might offer contributions on these subjects, but so far no such
offers have been received. It is not too late: please think about it.

The Exhibition will be a major showing of rare, significant and
historically important printed materials gathered from major
collections, with sections for Armenian, Arabic, Coptic, Hebrew,
Persian, Turkish, and a special display of early newspapers. There will
also be a room allocated to demonstrations of the latest programmes and
applications of digitised "typography" in Middle Eastern languages.
