Dear IDANETTERS, the message below was distributed via Kevin McGrew's IAPCHC listserv. It contains a request of John B. Carroll. Guess many of you are interested in it, and hopefully John gets many responses from you. He really deserves it, given what he has done and accomplished for our whole fields of interest. Be assured that I will give a detailed response. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Werner Werner W. On behalf of Dr. John Carroll, the author of the seminal 1993 book on "Human cognitive abilities", I'm forwarding the following message and attachment. Dr. Carroll would like to collect feedback from assessment professionals who have read the chapter he wrote for an edited book by H. Nyborg dealing with the topic of g (and dedicated to A. Jensen). This chapter was posted to the IAP CHC list "files" folder last fall, and it did generate some discussion. The purpose of this message is to bring this chapter back to the attention of the listserv members in order to elicit feedback that Dr. Carroll would then analyze. Therefore, for those who are interested, please read the attached copyrighted version of the chapter. Then, for those who have reactions, comments, etc., please articulate them to the entire list. The threads that pursue will be forwarded to Dr. Carroll. Below is a copy of Dr. Carroll's original message. The title of the chapter is "The higher stratum structure of cognitive abilities: Current evidence supports g and about ten broad factors." The evidence used in the chapter are the WJ-R norm correlation matrices -----Original Message----- From: John Carroll [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Saturday, June 22, 2002 6:46 PM To: Kevin McGrew Cc: John B. Carroll Subject: Your opinions on the existence, measurement, and use in your professional work, of the general and other broad factors of cognitive ability Dear Educational Psychologist: Could I have a few minutes of your time? I am attempting to survey your opinions, as detailed in the above Subject line, on matters that many people, including myself, regard as important to consider in connection with guiding individuals of any age in educational and occupational choices. I would like you to express yourself freely in one or two paragraphs of a reply email to me: I can promise that they will be held confidential and discussed only in general terms in any report or document that I prepare as a result of this survey. I am not myself an educational counselor, but I do research on the nature and importance of human abilities and feel that it is important to consider the opinions of people like yourself concerning the usefulness of information about human abilities.. I am particularly interested in whether you engage in discussions with your colleagues about these matters, directly (face to face) or in correspondence or electronic communications ("chat groups" and the like, etc.) Have you heard of the existence of any chat groups concerned with these matters? If you wish, you can consult a 21-page copyrighted document that I have prepared about different views on these matters. It is appended to this email in such a way that you can consult and/or print it out easily. Thank for your expression of opinions. [Note to Kevin McGrew: You are free to change this form in any way that you feel necessary or desirable. Please arrange to send this out with a copy of my 21-page paper available to print out easily rather than as an "Attachment") I understand that you may have to modify my format to follow the rules of this lisstserv. *********************************************************************** ** John B.
