Director, Forced Migration and Refugee Studies
American University in Cairo

Founded in 1919, AUC's campus is located in Cairo, Egypt, and its degree
programs are accredited by the Commission on  Higher Education of the Middle
States Association of Colleges and Schools. For more information see our
website at  www.aucegypt.edu. Renewal of an appointment depends upon
institutional needs and/or the appointee's performance. The  normal teaching
load is three courses per semester and English is the language of
instruction. Salary and rank are according  to scale based on qualifications
and professional experience. For expatriates, housing, annual round-trip air
travel for  appointee and accompanying family, plus schooling for up to two
children are included. In view of AUC's protocol  agreement with the
Egyptian Government, which requires specific proportions of Egyptian, U.S.,
and third-country citizen  faculty, at this time preference will be given to
qualified applicants who are U.S. citizens.

The American University in Cairo is seeking a director for its successful
program in Forced Migration and Refugee Studies  (FMRS), to begin in or
around January 2003. The FMRS offers a one-year postgraduate diploma, among
other activities.  The program is multidisciplinary, drawing from
anthropology, communications, political science, psychology, refugee law,
and sociology. The director's tasks include supervising the diploma teaching
(and teaching one course per semester), directing  the research program,
organizing the outreach program, and fundraising.    The successful
applicant will have a PhD in hand and demonstrable experience in the area of
refugee studies broadly  understood. Administrative experience in similar
programs and ability to speak Arabic are definite advantages. Rank is open;
salary is commensurate with experience.

The initial appointment will run from inception to summer 2004, with the
