May not be legal as it may be challanged on race (nationality)/disability
grounds. Universities may want to create a special fund. Andy Velarde UKC

Subject: DSA & International Students

Hi,

I have 2 queries:

1. I know this is probably an obvious question, but are research students
doing a PhD eligible for the DSA? I thought they were, but wanted to double
check!

2. I wondered if any of you have drawn up a policy for supporting
International Student with disabilities. I know the Birmingham policy was
circulated last week, but if anyone else has a policy, would you mind
sending me a copy. It would be greatly appreciated. I know in the
Birmingham Policy it states 'The university will make every effort to help
you, but you or your sponsors may be asked to fund resources or equipment
over and above [a number of support services listed]'. In the list they
include, I am concerned that it does not mention note takers, readers,
library assistants, personal care needs, equipment, cost of alternative
formats - the key items of support for some students. Is this legal under
SENDA? Any advice on this would be appreciated. I know this is a grey
area, but as we all know, it needs to be addressed and the sooner the better
as far as Brunel are concerned.

Thank you in advance for your help.

With best wishes
Claire
