Because digital information is being produced so  much more rapidly than
other forms, libraries (and  archives) of the future will inevitably be
libraries (and  archives) of digital content. Just to keep pace with  the
flood of new digital information, the library of the  near future will
require the means to collect, make  available, store and preserve digital
information in  the digital domain.

Primarily due to their dependence on a rapidly  changing technological
infrastructure, digital  resources are significantly less permanent than
their  paper-based equivalents. Their enduring accessibility  into the
future is far from assured.

Presented by Alan Howell, Manager, Preservation and  Storage Division, State
Library of Victoria, this one-day  workshop will  -
- raise awareness about the preservation of digital  information
- explain the issues that cause digital resources to be  inherently
impermanent
- provide a roadmap to the emerging solutions in  libraries and archives
- discuss practical recommendations to avoid the  'technological quicksand'
- give participants the information and tools to keep  in touch on this
issue

Alan Howell
Alan Howell is Manager of the Preservation and Storage  Division at the
State Library of Victoria. He is also an  honorary member of the
International Advisory Group to  PADI (Preserving Access to Digital
Information) project at  the National Library of Australia and honorary
member of  the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Committee
(representing libraries).

Alan Howell is particularly interested in facilitating effective  policy and
operational programs that bring together  access to and preservation of
documentary heritage;  initiating and sustaining networks and relationships
between preservation stakeholders; and presenting talks,  papers and
structured training sessions on the preservation  of documentary heritage to
university students, professional  groups and further and adult education
students.  A web  site on these interests is maintained at
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~aghowell.
