Dear colleagues,

At the The Oslo National College of the Arts we are currently
discussing what the ideal opening hours of an academic library ought to
be. We are in the process of planning a future move. Several smaller
libraries will merge and the result will be a large library with
valuable collections of fine and applied art, design and performing arts
such as drama, ballet and opera. The college library will serve
approximately 500 students and a staff of 80.

At present we are open between 9 and 16.30. We envisage a future where
we would, with the help of paid students, stay open until 22.00 (?),
maybe also a few hours on Saturdays and /or Sundays. Students in
performing arts have a busy schedule with classes until 18.00 and will
therefore need access to the library after that time.

We are discussing the possibility of allowing students and staff access
to an unmanned library on a more or less “ 24 hour 7 days a week” basis.
(Loans will only be permitted when the library is staffed) This will
mean installing a reliable alarm system and issuing every user with a
traceable key card.

Have any of you tried anything similar? Please share your experiences
with us.We will be happy to receive comments from anyone who has an opinion
on the matter.

Please reply directly to me.

Best regards
Åse Markussen
