The Library at Belton House, Lincolnshire, Wednesday 17th July, 2002

The Library of Belton House contains about 15000 volumes dating from 16th -
19th centuries. It contains incunabula, some 20th century material and has
strong holdings of European printing, notably Italian. The Library was
collected by successive members of the owning families (Brownlows and
Custs) over 300 years, from about 1620 to 1920. Acquisition was partly of
contemporary publications (identifiable from the mid-17th century onwards)
and partly antiquarian. Two of the Earls of Brownlow were noted
bibliophiles and members of the Roxburghe Club.

As well as seeing the Library, ARLIS/UK & Ireland visitors will be able to
explore the interiors and gardens of this magnificent Restoration country
house. Belton was built in 1685-88 and later altered by James Wyatt. The
stunning interiors contain exceptionally fine plasterwork and wood-carving,
as well as important collections of paintings, furniture, tapestries and
silverware. There are also formal gardens, an orangery, a magnificent
landscape park and a large adventure playground. The House is also famous
for its role in the film of Pride and Prejudice (used for Rosings).
An admission charge of £4.50 will be charged on the day. More information
