* Apologies for cross postings * ONE-DAY COURSE ======================================================== WINDOWS MEDIA - SERVER IMPLEMENTATION AND VIDEO ENCODING for further & higher education ======================================================== 7th March 2002 at the BUFVC, 77 Wells Street, London W1 *************************************************** Presenter: William Garrison (University of Portsmouth) Streaming media is a powerful collection of technologies that are likely to have a profound effect on learning in higher and further education. These technologies are simple to use, reliable, and provide new opportunities to improve learning outcomes. This course introduces one of these technologies, Windows Media, and examines the skills and facilities necessary to deliver video streams to large numbers of students. It will cover server design and networking issues as well as content preparation, encoding, and rights management. The session will be divided into two parts with the first focusing on technology, implementation, and overcoming barriers both technical and political within educational insitutions. The second part will explore content development including encoding, bandwidth, and image quality in the context of learning objectives. William Garrison is Producer at the Learning Development Centre, University of Portsmouth, and has been responsible for the development of extensive streaming media resources for thousands of simultaneous users. This includes the technical implementation for the JISC funded <Lifesign Project> which is now online with over forty video streams for the Life Sciences.
