The Missing Link seminar, held at the British Library Conference Centre on 21 October 2002, discussed and sought to identify how to address the needs of specialist repositories outlined in a recent report produced by the Society of Archivists with support from the British Library's Co-operation and Partnership Programme. This is the first in what is hoped to be a regular series of seminars to be organised by the Historical Manuscripts Commission and the Royal Historical Society in memory of the late Dr Gerald Aylmer. The full text of the survey, The Missing Link: a mapping project for specialist repositories in England (2002) is available at http://www.bl.uk/concord/pdf_files/missinglinkfinal.pdf and a report of the day's proceedings is available at http://www.hmc.gov.uk/new/missing.pdf. Suggested actions for the future have begun to emerge but the Historical Manuscripts Commission would welcome any further comments from interested parties.
