Department of Management Science & the Operational Research Group Scotland Modelling implications of Public Risk Policy at the HSE Speaker: Dr Phil Brighton (Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, Health & Safety Executive) This talk will look at how probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) has developed in the nuclear industry over the last 10 years. It will discuss how risk criteria are used in the UK to drive decision making on operations and investment and what it means to make risk as low as reasonably practical (ALARP). Comparison with international approaches will bring out basic issues concerning the frequentist/Bayesian debate and the relationship between risk and uncertainty. These points will be illustrated by reference to the risk from earthquakes. Refreshments Provided Room 886, Graham Hills Building, 40 George Street, Glasgow Monday 9th December 6.00pm for 6.30pm
