Conference & Exhibition

The Conference, entitled "Vital Elements - light, air, earth, water"
aims to investigate the potential of employing the arts within diverse environmental projects.
Using the over-arching theme of the raw materials that sustain life, presentations will focus on
diverse arts-led approaches that address topics such as post industrial regeneration and the
changing rural economy.

Bishop Burton College, a land-based beacon college of excellence in East Yorkshire is delighted
to welcome Elliot Morley MP to open a pioneering summer conference, that sees the College
team up with the Landscape and Arts Network; the organisation that advocates collaborative
artistic practice that is concerned with the defence and improvement of life in rural and urban
environments.

Keynote speakers include Ian Thompson of Newcastle University and author of "Ecology,
Landscape and Delight" and Francois Davin who will be flying in from the South of France to
present his paper; "Survival and life_A role for Art in Nature." Helix arts will highlight their
work in the north east that concentrates on art, science, community collaborations that focus on
building creative strategies to tackle water pollution, and Gary Olsen of 'Onetree' and Peter Sharpe
of Kielder Forest will outline contrasting arts strategies in rural settings, both highlighting the need
 for sustainable working practices.

Many other examples of environmental art in action, a lively practical workshop programme, and
evening entertainment make this an event not to be missed for all those with a vested interest in
the environment and our relationship with it.

The conference is being held at Bishop Burton College and runs between the 4th and 6th July 2002
is complimented by a major exhibition of work on the same theme, the exhibition is open from the
 27th June - 6th July (excluding 29th and 30th June) 10am-4pm.
