medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (26. December) is the feast day of: Stephen (d. between 34 and 37) Stephen is the first known martyr of Christianity. Veneration of Stephen is known since the fourth century, and in the west from the fifth century on. According to tradition, Stephen was a hellenized Jew, one of the seven deacons of the first Christian community of Jerusalem. He was a successful preacher, winning the hatred of many Jews. He was condemned to death and stoned. Dionysius (d. 267 or 268) The Greek Dionysius became bishop of Rome in 259 or 260. He devoted his pontificate to restoring the Christian community that had been hard-hit by Decius' persecution. He is accounted one of the most important popes of the third century. Zosimus (d. 418) Zosimus was a Greek, bishop of Rome from 417 to 418. His pontificate was marked with controversies, especially with the African Church concerning the rights of Rome over the entire Church. Tathai (5th/6th cent.) Tathai (Atheus) was born in Ireland. He lived as a hermit in Wales, where later he founded the monastery of Llantathan (St. Athan). Later tradition reports that he was a miracle worker, highly honored by the people. Euthymios of Sardes (d. 831 or 834) Euthymios became metropolitan of Sardes (Asia Minor) in c. 780. Because of his stand in the iconoclast controversy he was banished in 803, and later imprisoned and tortured. He died of the maltreatment he suffered. Dr. Phyllis G.
