I am not sure what period of medieval history in which you are most
interested, but you might find the comments of Peter Blair, in his
Anglo-Saxon England, useful. I just happened to be
reading it right after seeing your message. He considers chronology and
hagiography to have been the starting points for Anglo-Saxon historians.
He seems to think that monastic writers interested in history would
regularly have been trained in the computus and that the notes written
next to dates in Easter tables became the basis for monastic
annals. The origin of chronicles may be quite familiar to you
already, but it seemed pertinent to the question.

what with recent conferences
and volumes on "memory,"
i have begun to wonder about the early education of future
historians / archivists. In particular, is there any place
within the standard curriculum (anywhere from 7 liberal
arts to university) for history as a subject? or would
persons interested in the past just gravitate to the
archives and / or start reading chronicles on their own?
Any serious edition of a medieval chronicle discusses
sources possibly known to the compiler, but i have not
seen a discussion of the sort of history (local,
monastic, or whatever) that most literate people would
know, nor how they would acquire it. Boys reading
ovid on the sly is something of a topos - do we ever
here of them being scolded for reading secular history
or vernacular materials?
