Call for Papers

for a panel Do Regional Integration Processes Matter? Comparing
European,
American and Asian Experiences in the framework of the SASE Research
Network "Markets and Institutions" at the Conference “Work and Labor in
the
Global Economy” of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics
(SASE, www.sase.org) at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA,
June
27 - June 30, 2002

This panel is aimed at revitalizing the tradition of comparative
regional
integration studies. Regional integration processes are usually topics
of
research within specialized regionally oriented networks of scholars.
Until
the mid-1970s, however, there was a vivid practice of comparative
analyses
of regional integration, as part of the neofunctionalist research
program.

Recently there has been renewed interest in the debate on a general
theory
of regional integration, caused by the proliferation of these phenomena
in
all world regions and inspired by new theories of international
relations,
international political economy and world systems-research.

The role of regional integration processes in the world-system is often
too
narrowly analyzed in terms of economic aggregates or reduced to
participation in international negotiations. This omits the fact that
global competition is also intrinsically a form of competition between
socio-economic trajectories and specific institutional patterns. What is
the role of regional integration processes in this competition? Are they
just elements of a global process of competitive economic
liberalization,
or do they shape economic and social processes in the countries involved
decisively?
