Theme:    Culture and Ethics


The Society invites submissions in which philosophical research engages
issues of our time.  A diversity of philosophical approaches and
methodologies is welcome.   Possible topics include, but are not limited to,
the following:

* Human Rights and the Possibility of Moral Universalism
* Collective Responsibility and Cultural Identity
* Effects of Economic Systems on Culture
* Globalization, Democracy and Human Rights
* Are Virtues Universal?
* What is "Cultural Competence"?
* Critiques of Moral Relativism
* What Does It Mean to be a Cosmopolitan Citizen?
* Ethics:  Universalism and Essentialism
* Beliefs and Practices:  Cross Cultural Encounters and Critiques of
Local Practices
* The Role of Virtues in Cultural Traditions
* Domestic Polity and Contemporary Culture
* The Problem of Cross Cultural Moral Understanding:  Issues of
Interpretation and Translation

Submissions are due by February 1, 2002.  Each should be mailed, in
triplicate and prepared for  blind review, to
Professor Lani Roberts, Department of Philosophy, Oregon State University,
Corvallis, OR  97331.  Submissions should
be  (1)  12 pages in length (25 minutes reading time) on  any topic within
the general theme, and be accompanied by  (2)
 a 100-150 word abstract, and (3) a brief biography.

Expenses involved in the conference necessitate a fee of $65 which will be
required of all attendees and paper presenters.

Conference papers can also be submitted for publication in the society's
Journal of Philosophy in the Contemporary World.   Articles should: 1) be
clearly and concisely written; 2) treat their subjects in an original and
substantive manner; and 3) address the ways philosophy might be applied to
contemporary problems, or use the resources of philosophical thought to help
define, analyze, clarify, or resolve contemporary problems.  Journal
submissions should be addressed to the editor:
