There are a number of good genealogical programs out there for various personal computer and handheld platforms - some free but mostly for sale. I use Legacy (http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/) which is actually free in the standard version, but some of the fancier reporting and charting functions are only available in a relatively inexpensive ($24.95) add-on package. Their new add-on for timeline displays (Genelines - same price) looks really interesting for analyzing family groups; I just ordered both of them. Ideally, I am looking for one that would transform the data on relationships of persons to a reference individual into a family tree, including those persons who must logically have existed (e.g. deceased spouses). I am dealing with patrilineal households in which sons continue to live in their fathers' houses after marriage. Beryl Nicholson
