Don't we have to distinguish between the patron saint of (the realm of)
France and the patron saint of the Royal House ?

Surely St Denys is the patron saint of the French monarchy ? Esp. after the
standoff at Reims in 1124 when - according to tradition, says she hastily -
the oriflamme was paraded for the first time. The battle-cry of the French
Kings leading their troops to battle was "Montjoye-Saint-Denys".

BTW Interesting that the Oriflamme seems to have survived the French
Revolution as the symbol of the spirit of France even tho its monarchy had
gone. Its last manifestation seems to date from c. 1913 or at least that is
the date I would ascribe to what I saw in the Chapel of St Louis in the
Abbey of St-Denys a few months back....
