From someone who has read this book several times and consults it
frequently: Bell's book is indeed a treasure! The literacy of the Syon nuns
and their patrons has long--and justly--been celebrated (See also the work
of Nancy Warren on book ownership at Syon), but what Bell's book
meticulously demonstrates is the "illiteracy" of medieval monastic women in
general has been vastly overestimated.
