medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (27. November) is the feast day of: Jakobus Intercisus (d. 420 or 421) Jakobus was a high official at the Persian court. To keep the king's favor he lapsed from Christianity, but soon returned to the church. The king wasn't happy. Jakobus was imprisoned and tortured, then cut into 28 pieces (thus his nickname). Maximus of Riez (d. 460) Maximus was born in c. 400, and at the age of 12 entered the monastery of Lerins. He succeeded Honoratus as abbot in 430, but in 434 against his will was consecrated as bishop of Riez. He continued to live an ascetic life as bishop. His presence at several church councils is attested, and he was apparently one of the leading churchmen of Gaul of his time. Acharius (d. 640) Acharius entered Columbanus' monastery of Luxeuil in 594. He is attested as bishop of the double bishopric of Novon-Tournai from 626. He was in contact with many important churchmen and missionaries of his time, and was an important counsellor to the Frankish King Dagobert I. Oda of Sint Oden-Roey (d. c. 725) According to legend, Oda was the daughter of an Irish king. Her father sent her to Liege to the tomb of Lambert, so that she could be healed of her blindness. After her return, Oda refused to marry the man her dad had chosen for her, fled, and went on pilgrimages to Rome and Apulia. Later she lived as a hermit in Brabant. The town of Sint Oden-Roey developed at the side of her hermitage. Bilhild (d. 8th cent.) Bilhild was a Bavarian. She was married to the Thuringian king Hetan I, and succeeded in converting him to Christianity. After her husband's death, Bilhild founded the nunnery of Altmunster in or near Mainz and led the community as abbess until her death. Fergus (early 8th cent.) Fergus was an Irish bishop who evangelized considerable areas of Scotland. His relics were kept at Glamis until the time of James IV. Dr. Phyllis G.
