medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

How are these things determined, indeed?
I am rather tired of seeing the statement that
"x" is patron saint of "y" projected back to
the earliest middle ages! has any work been done
on "specialization" of saints? i would be
particularly interested in any examples concerning
St. Barbara!
