medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (9. November) is the feast day of:

Antoninos of Apameia (d. 4th cent.) According to legend, Antoninos was a
stonemason. When he erected a church, he was killed by the indignant
citizens of his city.

Theodoros of Euchaita (d. 306) Theodoros is regarded as one of the great
martyrs of the Eastern church. He is supposed to have been a soldier in
Asia Minor in the army of Emperor Maximian. When the persecution of
Christians began, he publicly professed his faith. He was tortured and
then burned to death. Among other places, his relics made it to Venice,
where he was patron of the city before the pilfering of St. Mark.

Helena (Ilona) of Hungary (d. 1270) Helena was prioress of the Dominican
convent of Veszprem in Hungary. She was noted as a mystic and bore the
stigmata. Although not formally canonized, she is honored as blessed in
Hungary and in the Dominican order.

Giovanna of Signa (d. 1307) Giovanna was a shepherdess who lived as a
recluse near her home of Signa (Tuscany). Both the Franciscans and the
Vallombrosans claim that she was a tertiary of their order. Her cult won
official approval in 1798.
