National Programmes based in Savile Row are responsible for the mapping of
SM boundaries. No one from National Programmes is currently on SMR Forum. I
have forwarded the discussion on to Alphena Gordon who leads the mapping
team. She has asked me to post the following reply to the list on her
behalf.

Thanks to everyone that has offered to supply their SM data to EH. Loading
your data might save us some time in recreating our record, however
maintaining an accurate and consistent record is our main concern. The data
we hold is the definitive record and any procedure for recreating this
primary record will need to be consistent across the whole data set. It is
for this reason that I believe it would be more beneficial in the long run
to recreate all the data from EH's primary record.

I agree that EH should be the source of this information and supply the SM
boundaries electronically. The work we are doing with DEFRA under the MAGIC
project, to recreate the SM polygons is a six month pilot, this will
determine whether the approach is viable and give us an idea of timescales.
The pilot will help to provide an idea of timescales for completion of this
work and we will then be in a better position to look at the possibility of
disseminating this record.

We are validating against the 1:10,000 because that was the scale the data
was captured against some years ago. To recreate the polygons against a
large scale map would be more time consuming, there is a possibly that this
might introduce errors and for some cases a site visit might be necessary to
ensure the boundary is correct. Unfortunately, with the number of sites in
the schedule EH would not have the resources to take this kind of work on.
We will however, be looking at capturing some sites at a more appropriate
scale in the future.

I hope the above gives you answers to your questions. EH are always willing
to work with external bodies such as SMR. I hope that we will be in a
position, in the near future, to supply you with the data you need to
populate your GIS.

Thanks Alphena
