2002 Conference
Text in the City: Germany and City Life

The 4th Annual German Studies Graduate Student Conference at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison 12 and 13 April, 2002.

From Dorf to Metropolis, from Burg to urban landscape, from the
medieval to the (post)modern the city serves as a focal point for
language and culture. The city has been the locus of language
standardization, a symbol of economy and commerce, and the
object of modern fascination and horror.

Students in any area of Germanic studies are invited to submit
proposals for papers dealing with the topic of city life in German-
and Dutch-speaking countries. Some suggestions for topics
include:

Representations of city life (in film, literature, etc.)
Urban dialects
Migration and Immigration
Architecture
Culture and Subculture
Berlin
The Medieval City
Urban vs. Pastoral
Cabaret

The deadline for submitting abstracts is January 29, 2002.
Submissions should not bear the author's name. Please attach
instead a sheet of paper with the following information: name, title
of paper, department & university affiliation, address, phone
number, and email address. papers should not exceed 20 minutes
in length (8-10 pages).
