From: "Neelakshi Suryanarayan" <[log in to unmask]> International Conference A DECADE OF CHANGE : REFLECTIONS IN HUNGARIAN AND SLAVONIC LANGUAGES, LITERATURES AND CULTURES. DEPARTMENT OF SLAVONIC AND FINNO-UGRIAN STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF DELHI SOUTH CAMPUS, NEW DELHI, INDIA. 16-17 MARCH, 2002. The cultural dimension of the cataclysmic changes of the late 1980's and 1990's in Eastern and Central Europe need to be probed and studied in depth from the perspective of ongoing transition from centrally planned to market driven economies and the challanges posed by globalisation - not only in trade and business relations but in social, cultural and psychological aspects as well. Needless to say, substantial changes have taken place in the fields of language, literature and culture of these societies. Major changes in society always get reflected in art and literature produced by that society. In their own subtle way, artists, writers and film makers are able to document these changes even at a very nascent stage. Unlike political and economic transformations, which are discussed at various fora from time to time, cultural mutations in these societies have been studied rather sporadically. The Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies holds the unique position of being the only Institution in India where courses in Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, Serbian, Croatian,Bulgarian,Polish and Russian studies are offered. In this context, the Department is organizing a two-day international conference to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas on the above mentioned changes. An added dimension of the conference could be to dwell on how these changes have been perceived by academics in different countries. We invite papers on the following themes : a}Language and Literature, b)Art and Architecture, Cinema, Theatre, Mass media, c)Society, Religion, Customs,Value systems. The conference will be held on 16-17 March,2002 at the Department in New Delhi. The deadline for receiving an abstract of yur paper is 30th Decenber2001.The working language of the Conference would be English. We will be happy to provide you local hospitality and lodging.Sightseeing trips to Agra (The Taj Mahal) and in and around the old hostoric city of Delhi will be arranged after the Conference. We expect you, however, to make your own travel arrangements to India.
