Ambulance Services are, by nature, a cautious lot. The

You are correct that the long board is technically for
extrication only but in this country, where transit
and imaging times are quoted as short, this method has
benefits over extricating on one piece of equipment,
then moving to another.

We will shortly recommend that collars are released in
head injured patients once fully immobilised on the
board as the evidence that they raise ICP is pretty
strong.
