Multimodality: a step towards universal access
About the UAIS Journal
----------------------
The UAIS Journal solicits original research contributions addressing
the accessibility, usability and acceptability of Information
Society Technologies by anyone, anywhere, at anytime, and through any
media and device. Universal access refers to the systematic effort to
proactively apply principles, methods and tools of universal design,
in order to develop Information Society Technologies which are
accessible and usable by all citizens.
The Journal's unique focus is on theoretical, methodological, and
empirical research, of both technological and non-technological nature,
that addresses equitable access and active participation of potentially
all citizens in the Information Society.

Aims and scope of this special issue
------------------------------------
Multimodality (that is the combination of various expression or
presentation modalities) appears as a promising approach for
facilitating access:
- to all users, including the very young and the elderly, as well as
people with various types of disabilities;
- in all contexts of use, especially those emerging due to the diffusion
of novel computer applications contributing to the implementation of
new design principles and paradigms, such as "mobile computing",
"ubiquitous computing", "disappearing computer", "ambient intelligence",
etc.
Original research contributions are solicited, which focus on the use of
new interaction media and modalities with a view to improving computer
accessibility for all users in all contexts of use.
The thematic scope of this special issue includes scientific issues
relating to the software organization and implementation, or to the
utility and usability of novel input/output medias and modalities,
provided that it may contribute to improving and widening the apparatus
for universal access.
Main topics
-----------
This special issue will focus on research work on the design, development,
evaluation, and use of new interaction media / modalities and their
combinations.
Authors of submissions should carefully explain how the work and results
presented contribute to facilitating and promoting universal access.
Contributions are solicited in, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Design and implementation of novel interaction devices, modalities and
forms of multimodality
- Ergonomics and human factors of media, modalities and forms of
multimodality
- Design theory, software architectures, and support tools for
multimodal HCI
- Methods, techniques and instruments to assess the utility,
accessibility and usability of novel modalities and forms of
multimodality
- Modeling user diversity in the usage of novel medias, modalities and
forms of multimodality
- Modality adaptation ? Adaptable and adaptive multimodal HCI
- Multimodal interaction with computer-mediated virtual spaces
- Tools, techniques and methodologies for multimodal corpora (creation,
analysis, etc.)
Important dates
---------------
Deadline for submission of papers: December 31, 2001
Notification of acceptance: March 15, 2002.
Deadline for submission of camera-ready version of accepted papers:
June 30, 2002.
Expected publication date of the special issue: second half of 2002.
Authors should submit their manuscripts electronically as PDF files to
the Guest Editor of the special issue, Noëlle Carbonell

Reviewing process
-----------------
All papers will be peer reviewed by three reviewers, experts in the
field, appointed by the Guest Editor of the issue in consultation
with the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal.
