Apologies for cross posting. Conference invitation: MEDITERRANEAN URBANISATION 800-600 B.C. Thursday 15 November and Friday 16 November 2001 at the British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1 The eighth and seventh centuries B.C. were a period of major settlement change all across the Mediterranean. Archaeologists have been tempted to talk of 'urban' forms, and to postulate changes in social and political organisation in which they associate the new settlement forms with changing relationships between settlements and countryside and with the origin of the state. As the evidence available increases, the questions of the relationship between these settlements and the settlements that preceded them, and more particularly of settlement forms in one place to settlement forms in another place, have become more acute. This conference brings together leading archaeologists from across the Mediterranean to survey the current state of the evidence and to review the issues involved in its interpretation. All those interested are welcome to attend, but because of limited space it is essential to register in advance.
